Joe Biden says America may lift travel restrictions with Europe

American President Joe Biden has said that America is reviewing when it can lift restrictions that ban most non US citizens from travelling to the country from most of Europe.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel brought the issue up at a meeting in the White House on Thursday.

A working group between the US and the EU has been holding talks over the past month with the aim of resuming travel between the continents, with many Irish people intensely awaiting news on when this might happen.

Joe Biden said of discussions about when restrictions could be lifted: \"It\'s in the process now. He added that he is likely to be able to give an answer within the next several days about what is likely to happen.

I am waiting to hear from our Covid team as to when that should be done.

The ban on non-US citizens going to American from most of Europe has been in effect since the start of the pandemic, imposed by then President Donald Trump in March 2020.

European countries were hopeful that America would ease restrictions after the EU eased their own restrictions to those coming from the US in June. In Ireland, passengers coming into the country from American aren\'t required to complete mandatory hotel quarantine according to the Department of Foreign Affairs website.

However, all passengers must fill out a Covid-19 Passenger Locator Form and give proof of a negative PCR test at least 72 hours before arrival.

At the moment, only citizens and lawful permanent residents of the US, certain family members, and other people who meet specified exceptions are allowed to enter the States.

Ireland is ready to use the Digital Green Certificate for international travel next Monday,

Irish citizens go abroad to sunnier climes at last across the Member States.

Despite having this travel pass, which shows whether someone is vaccinated against Covid-19, has recently recovered or has a negative test, it cannot be used to go to the like of New York City or Los Angeles as the travel ban is still in place.

The certs will be issued to around 1.9 million people who have been fully vaccinated across Ireland this week.
